New methods for evaluating burn severity across broad spatial extents, using satellite imagery, have enabled new opportunities for wildland fire managers and researchers. While numerous studies have calibrated burn severity for forest types of the western United States, comparatively little research has been conducted in forest types of eastern US, where seasonality modulates wildfire occurrence and reflectance patterns of vegetation.Read More

Check out this month's research brief focusing on how effective suppression in the wildland urban interface results in different forest ecology in these areas. Dr. Inga La Puma and colleagues used a 50 year spatial fire history to investigate how distance from development was related to fire frequency and forest composition.
This brief is part of our Canadian focused line-up, which also includes a field trip and webinar in September 2016 to share compelling fire science between the U.S. and Canada in the North Atlantic region. This research brief is part of that effort and focuses on municipal level wildland-urban interface delineation in Nova Scotia. It is a cross-cutting topic that can apply to any city, town, or neighborhood in need of a sound method to prioritize resources in fire-fighting or mitigation.

This month we searched for a recent paper using LANDFIRE data in preparation for our March 16th webinar highlighting the LANDFIRE resource. We found a very recent paper out of Wisconsin by Tracy Hmielowski and colleagues using LANDFIRE vegetation and fire return intervals to help pinpoint high priority areas for prescribed fire in the WUI, and throughout the state. Don't miss this brief describing Hmielowski et. al.'s methods to find out how you might be able to use them for your own area!

The use of witness trees as pyro-indicators for mapping past fire conditions.
This is a paper on mapping fire tolerance. The is the first in a series of research briefs addressing different methods used to research and understand North Atlantic fire history. Stay tuned for other methods we plan to cover, including pollen and charcoal dating from soil cores, fire scars, written accounts, and maps.

Vegetation, landcover, and fuels were mapped within an 8,166-acre area of the Ossipee Pine Barrens in Carroll County, New Hampshire. The Nature Conservancy divides the Ossipee Pine Barrens landscape into three sections: White Lake State Park, Pine Barrens East, and the West Branch Pine Barrens. Assessing forest resilience to disturbances including climate change is an important aspect of adaptive management. Climate change impacts on fire and forest composition in the Pinelands of New Jersey have not been assessed to date and the prospect of major shifts in forest composition present challenges to the mission of the Pinelands National Reserve to preserve the ecological integrity of the Pinelands.Read More
Coupled human-natural systems present complex relationships between human influence and ecosystem response and services. The Pinelands of New Jersey represent a highly human influenced system noted for its fire regime which helps maintain pinelands cover and halt succession from pine to oak forest composition.Read More
To aid in management planning, I used analysis of current and historical aerial photos, data from 32 study plots and 10 observation points, and multivariate analysis to classify the vegetation of the Preserve into eight types, and to map and describe these types.Read More
