North Atlantic Prescribed Fire
Science Workshop 2021

Tues, Sep 14 - Thurs, Sep 16  |  Workshop

all day each day

About the Event

Though registration has closed, we have a small number of spaces still available. If interested, please register and email NAFSEhelp@gmail.com so we can send you the information you need in order to attend.

We are hosting a workshop in September 2021 to reset, recharge, and reimagine the future of fire science co-production. The last year has posed unimaginable challenges to fire scientists, managers, and wildland firefighters. We are thrilled to have a plan to reconnect in person!

Field trips to New Jersey Pine Barrens sites will stimulate discussion about regional prescribed fire science challenges and solutions. The workshop day will build a structure for region-wide prescribed fire science co-production and post-workshop coordination.

SAFETY STRATEGY AND MEETING INTENT

As restrictions continue to challenge our ability to gather, it is more important now than ever to take advantage of opportunities to get together safely in-person.

This event is being planned with COVID safety as a top priority for the benefit of each individual participant and for the fire science community at large.

Based on our experience with digital, hybrid, and in-person events over the last year, there are outcomes from in-person meetings that simply cannot be replicated in a virtual space. Face-to-face meetings directly develop personal and professional connections, inspire future work, catalyze collaborations, and facilitate consensus on challenges and solutions. With wildfires burning rampantly across the U.S. and a global climate crisis at hand, it is essential to break down barriers between fire science and management.

We are confident in the facilities and our plans to execute this event following COVID-safe practices. These include:

  • Planning an almost entirely outdoor program, including when holding facilitated meetings

  • Reserving a backup, indoor meeting space with more than a wall of openable windows

  • Flexible lodging accommodations that allow for separation from other individuals

  • Meeting or exceeding federal, state, and local health protocols

Please contact us with any concerns; we are happy to provide more safety details upon request.
