The Hot-Dry-Windy Index (HDWI) harnesses the basic science of how weather affects fire behavior. The index answers the question: “What physical weather conditions make fires difficult to manage?” The HDWI approach has two main advantages. Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) can offer more efficient, precise, and standardized monitoring by capturing detailed plot-level 3D data. TLS via the Interagency Ecosystem LiDAR Monitoring program (IntELiMon) enables rapid, repeatable measurements of forest structure, habitat conditions, and fuel characteristics, improving data quality and compatibility, supporting large-scale cross-boundary monitoring efforts, and enhancing communication of environmental changes over time.
The overall objective for the Fire History Field Day was to showcase interdisciplinary research and cooperation, and how fire and human history can inform land management.
