Fire is a natural part of many ecosystems—and managing it safely takes skill, collaboration and cultural knowledge. At The Nature Conservancy’s Wells Barrens Preserve in Maine, the Prescribed Fire Training Exchange (TREX) brings together practitioners from across the country to learn and burn.
September 2025 - The objective of the two-week Prescribed Fire Training Exchange (TREX) program in Maine was to facilitate peer-to-peer, experiential learning for prescribed fire professionals and others interested in advancing innovative tools to restore fire-adapted ecosystems and was being designed to support states and provinces interested in hosting their own TREX to increase prescribed fire capacity across the region.
Participants engaged in hands-on training in the ecology of fire-adapted ecosystems, communications and community outreach, prescribed fire monitoring, operational assignments, prescribed fire use, cultural fire and collaboration among a diverse array of participating individuals and organizations.
The Nature Conservancy put together an excellent review of the event. You can watch the video above and use the button below for a written description and images of the Maine TREX 2025 event.
